The island of Akutan in Alaska will see the drilling of a third test well for a geothermal project, following two initial wells in 2010. There is hope that a geothermal power plant could provide power for this remote island which is part of the Aleutian Island groups in Alaska, U.S.

Following early project work in 2009, the island of Akutan is now planning to drill a third geothermal test well on the island.

In 201o, the city of Akutan drilled two test wells in 2010. In 2014, another geothermal project in Alaska has moved funds from a latent project in the Makushin Volcano at Unalaska due to lack of development to the Akutan project in order to avoid lapse in grant money.

geochemical study on Akutan Island, released by the U.S. Geological Survey indicated a good potential for geothermal power development on the island in 2014.

Now with drilling a third well, the city wants to confirm the scale of a known resource that might supply electrical power for local residents and Trident seafood plant, as reported by local news.

A permit has been obtained from the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.
