With big ambitions for geothermal development, Ethiopia sees start of development of the Aluto-Langano and Tendaho projects with a planned combined geothermal power generation capacity of 170 MW.

In a presentation at the African Rift Geothermal Conference, currently taking place in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, the new Minister of Mines, Petrol and Natural Gas confirmed his country’s ambitious plans for the development of its geothermal resources for power generation.

As we reported before, Ethiopia has identified 22 prospective sites for geothermal development, and has already started the development of new projects at Aluto-Langano and Tendaho.

Aluto-Langano is currently the only geothermal power plant in Ethiopia but is currently not operating to the best of my understanding. Aluto-Langano is expected to generate up to 70 MW and the Tendaho project up to 100 MW of geothermal power.

UNEP and the ARGeo program have successfully completed an integrated geo-scientific study of Tendaho (Dubti-Ayrobera).

In his presentation to the delegates of the ARGeo conference, Minister Motuma highlighted the need for cooperation between the African countries to develop its geothermal resources.

There will be a field trip visiting the Aluto-Langano site and I will post pictures next week.
