Breakthrough Energy Ventures, a new investment fund set up by Bill Gates has described geothermal as one of the investment areas looked at, and details drilling technology as a key element of interest.

Late last year, we reported on Bill Gates announcement regarding investment targets of his Breakthrough Energy Ventures fund. As part of the announced focus on geothermal, details on what exactly the company is looking at emerged in an article by Greentech Media.

According to the company’s website, Breakthrough Energy Ventures sees recent advances in drilling technology as presenting interesting new opportunities for geothermal. “Techniques like horizontal drilling, multilateral drilling, extended reach drilling, complex path drilling, and hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, all developed to extract fossil resources, offer interesting possibilities for geothermal energy,”

So it looks like the company is taking a technology investment approach on its geothermal engagement.
