Calpine has faced the opposition of native american tribes concerned with the impact that geothermal development might have on the the vicinity of Medicine Lake in California.

Struggles between local communities and geothermal development are a sad occurrence. Calpine is looking into developing new geothermal projects in the vicinity of Medicine Lake in California, and it has faced the opposition of native american tribes, concerned with the impact that geothermal development might have on the area, of great historical, religious and environmental value.

Local news state that the “Pit River Tribe and their Native American and environmental allies optimistically left the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco following oral arguments in their long legal battle to protect the Medicine Lake Highlands”.

It is worth mentioning, that geothermal is a safe, clean energy source when developed according to regulations and best practices. Developers should always work alongside with local communities and stakeholders when starting projects, specially when there are environmental and/or religious concerns at stake.
