While not brand-new (it is of March 2008), this report on the potential for geothermal energy in the Caribbean region caught my attention.

While not brand-new (it is of March 2008), this report on the potential for geothermal energy in the Caribbean region caught my attention. The report (pdf) is available here.

The report describes the volcanic activities and the geothermal potential for the islands in this region. Currently only Guadeloupe (legally part of France and thereby part of the European Union) has a 4.5 MW binary plant. Geothermal development in the region is scarce with some developments in St Kitts & Nevis, Montserrat and Dominica.

Drilling for geothermal resource development in Dominica is expected to begin in June 2009. The government of Dominica works in collaboration with the European Union, and other French development partners. (Source: Nature Island Blog)

An old overview on the activities of the Eastern Caribbean Geothermal Development prjoects (2004) can be found here.
