The electric utility of Ecuador Celec is preparing early pre-feasibility work for the potential 100 MW Chachimbiro geothermal project and discussing possible support by JICA.

Ecuadorian utility Corporacion Electrica del Ecuador (Celec) will start initial preparation work for exploration work at the Chachimbiro geothermal prospect.

The project is currently in the pre-feasibility phase in the region of Urcuqui, in Imbabura province.

The utility has now contracted for the work on an access road to the project, which will also benefit local communities.

The geothermal field of Chachimbiro has an estimated potential of about 100 MW. Celec is in discussion with “Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on technical cooperation for advanced stage of pre-feasibility studies, including the first deep geothermal drilling. Earlier this summer, Celec also signed a cooperation agreement with El Salvador’s LaGeo.
