Community in Canada to explore further geothermal heating potential

The former mining community of Springhill in Canada wants to evaluate the geothermal potential of old mines for district heating purposes.
Local news from Canada state that Springhill is looking into developing geothermal energy and will soon bring in experts to assess the latent potential. According to the local news source, “The Verschuren Centre for Sustainability in Energy and the Environment at Cape Breton University will conduct the research, in hopes of better understanding the geothermal resource potential within the former Springhill mines.”
Old and disused mines have been known to have the potential to be developed for geothermal heating purposes and the Springhill community could capitalize upon this. The town already know the benefits of geothermal heating since it has some buildings and a community center already using this technology.
The same news source details that “The Verschuren Centre will perform scientific and academic analysis and provide technical advice to the Authority. The research will be presented by the Centre at the Cumberland Energy Authority’s 1st Annual Energy Symposium taking place on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at the Springhill Community Centre.”
