Due to a decrease in electricity consumption, the development of the Tauhara geothermal area will be delayed for the next few years by Contact Energy.

Contact Energy will be delaying the geothermal power plant at the Tauhara steamfield, north-east of Taupo, which was intended to go online this January but due to a decrese in the cosumpiton of electricity, the project has been delayed.

Local news quote Contact Energy´s chief executive Dennis Barnes stating that “the market is not right to build the power station, and supply and demand figures suggest that an investment is a good few years away.”

Mr Barnes still believes that geothermal energy is future and one of the best alternatives for energy generation in New Zealand.
