On its website, Mexico's Ministry of Energy reports currently 24 geothermal exploration permits given and 6 utilisation concessions.

In compliance with the Geothermal Energy Law until June 2018, 24 exploration permits and 6 concessions have been granted for the exploitation of geothermal resources.

With Permits, activities that contribute to the geological, geophysical and geochemical knowledge of the permitted geothermal area can be carried out, as well as carrying out works and in order to corroborate the existence of the geothermal resource.

In the case of Concessions, these will allow the exploitation of geothermal resources for commercial purposes, to obtain electrical energy and other uses through the heat of the subsoil, either through the drilling of wells or any other means, including other works necessary for the construction, extraction, start-up, production and transformation of the geothermal resource.
