Speaker Profiles:
Tim Smit. A pianist and former music producer, Tim is celebrated for co-founding the Eden Project in Cornwall where he is Chief Executive. The Eden Project has attracted over 11 million visitors to date, all keen to learn about sustainability in practice, and has invested already in renewable technologies. The Eden Project has recently received planning permission for a Deep Geothermal heat and power plant, due to commence development in 2011. Tim will talk about the Eden Project’s plans, his interest in this technology and its potential contribution to Cornwall.
Dr Ryan Law. The Founder and Managing Director of Geothermal Engineering and Chair of REA‘s Deep Geothermal Group, Ryan has 10 years of geothermal energy experience at ARUP. He has a degree in Geology from Oxford University and a Masters in Hydrogeology. His PhD thesis was on the transport and modelling of heat in fractured rocks. Ryan will talk about UK activity, potential and industry support needs.
Professor Horst Rueter. An internationally renowned and widely published expert on Deep Geothermal and seismic monitoring, Professor Rueter headed the Geophysics Department of mining and exploration company DMT for over 30 years, overseeing more than a 100 projects. He is a Board Member of the German Geophysical Society and Vice-President of the Geothermal Society. Professor Horst will be talking about the fast developing geothermal industry in Germany and its successful support framework.
Lord Teverson. Lord Teverson was appointed to the Lords in 2006 to serve as a LibDem Whip and shadow Minister. He is the LibDem’s energy and climate spokesperson in the Lords and a passionate advocate of Deep Geothermal energy. Lord Teverson will talk about efforts to include Deep Geothermal exploration licensing in the Energy Bill and the prospects for better support for the sector.
Gaynor Hartnell (Chair). Gaynor is Chief Executive of the Renewable Energy Association. She has been with the REA since its formation in 2001, working in the field of renewable energy since 1995. She has a degree in Environmental Science and a Masters in Science and Technology Policy. The REA represents over 650 companies in renewable energy, covering all technologies and from sole traders to multinationals.
