Philippines' Energy Development Corp. (EDC) is planning to set up a 20 MW geothermal plant using excess steam from the Palinpinon 2 facility of Southern Negros Geothermal Production Field (SNGF) to help plug the projected power deficit in Negros Occidental.

Philippines’ Energy Development Corp. (EDC) is planning to set up a 20 MW geothermal plant using excess steam from the Palinpinon 2 facility of Southern Negros Geothermal Production Field (SNGF) to help plug the projected power deficit in Negros Occidental.

The Field currently supplies steam to the 112.5 MW Palinpinon-1 and the 80 MW Palinpinon-2 plants of the National Power Corp. It is the second largest of the four geothermal fields operated by EDC and is also the first to “export” its power supply across the sea. The company hopes to commission the new facility by 2010.

EDC further has further pledged to leave behind a “green legacy”. According to EDC, it not only wants to play a bigger role in the country’s reforestation projects. It doesn’t want to leave behind vast areas of denuded forest land surrounding its power plants long after these have ceased to function.
