Energy Development Corp (EDC) has restored partial operations at the Unified Leyte geothermal power complex more than a week after the it sustained damage from Typhoon 'Yolanda'.

According to the news piece  In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, EDC said a portion of the 125-megawatt (MW) Upper Mahiao and 51-MW Leyte Optimization plants are now generating electricity.

“The power plants are currently on reliability runs and have successfully dispatched 57 MW into the grid,” the country’s largest geothermal energy producer said.

The two power plants are part of the Unified Leyte facility, which also includes the 232.5-MW Malitbog and 180-MW Mahanagdong generating facilities.

Located in Tongonan, Leyte, the output of the geothermal complex is covered by a power purchase agreement between state-owned National Power Corp (Napocor) and EDC.

State-run Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp, which oversees the privatization of Napocor’s plants, recently auctioned off the latter’s contracted capacity with Unified Leyte to EDC subsidiary Unified Leyte Geothermal Energy Inc (ULGEI), FDC Utilities Inc of the Filinvest group, Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp, Aboitiz Energy Solutions Inc, Waterfront Mactan Casino Hotel Inc, Good Friends Hydro Resources Corp and Vivant Energy Corp.

Lopez-owned EDC has yet to indicate when it may be able to fully reactivate Unified Leyte, but subsidiary ULGEI, has already pulled out its offer for the facility’s contracted capacity.
