Energy Development Corp (EDC) resumes operation of the 75-megawatt Malitbog geothermal power plant. This is the fourth unit of the Unified Leyte plants brought online again, after sustained damage during the typhoon ‘Yolanda’.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange today, Energy Development Corp (EDC) said one unit of the 75-megawatt Malitbog power plant has resumed operation. This is now another unit of the Unified Leyte geothermal power complex brought online again, after the complex sustained damage during the onslaught of Typhoon ‘Yolanda’.

Earlier, the country’s largest geothermal energy producer said partial operations had resumed at the Tongonan, Upper Mahiao and Leyte optimization plants.

“We had been able to speed up the restoration process by utilizing existing spares available from EDC’s warehouse facilities and through the early deliveries from our suppliers. EDC will now begin the reliability run and return to service of the mentioned 75 MW unit of the Malitbog Power Plant in coordination with the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines,” the Lopez-owned power plant operator said.

Located in Tongonan town in the province of Leyte, the Unified Leyte geothermal complex is under contract to supply state-owned National Power Corp (Napocor).

Before Yolanda struck, the government, through Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp (Psalm), auctioned off its supply contract. Among the bidders were FDC Utilities Inc of the Filinvest Group, Trans-Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp, Aboitiz Energy Solutions Inc, Waterfront Mactan Casino Hotel Inc, Good Friends Hydro Resources Corp and Vivant Energy Corp.”
