Overview of geothermal events at COP24 meetings in Katowice, Poland – shared by EGEC
The UN Climate Change Conference COP24 has started today in Katowice, Poland. This important round of international climate negotiations will feature a couple of geothermal energy themed events to highlight the role geothermal can play in the overall energy transition, including power, heating and cooling.
The UNFCCC COP24 (Climate Change Conference) is kicking off in Katowice, Poland today. This round of international climate negotiations among partners of the UNFCCC is reputed the most important one following the COP21 in Paris where the parties agreed to pursue an objective of limiting the rise of global temperature well below 2 centigrades aiming for 1.5 centigrades. Several events on geothermal energy are being organised.
During the two weeks of the COP, several events will showcase how geothermal energy contributes to climate change mitigation, and how it can contribute further. Poland, being a coal dominated country, is engaging seriously in geothermal energy, notably to solve the problem of air pollution from fossil fuel heating and energy poverty.
The following events are organised on geothermal energy during COP24:
- 6 Dec: 13.45-14.45 (Bug) – Geothermal Energy Development in East Africa
- 11 Dec: 11.10-13.00 (Pieniny) – Stronger Together: Showcasing Success of Renewable Energy Technologies Working Together
- 11 Dec: (Polish Pavillion) – Measures, financing, technologies for clean air
- 13.12 – 16.00 – 17.00 (Polish pavillion) – “Geothermal energy in Poland – perspectives of use in low-emission heating for climate change mitigation and sustainable development” (organised by the Polish Geothermal Society)
For more information, here is the list of side events.
More intervention on geothermal energy may come to light as the COP24 progresses.
