Four new geothermal areas are being considered in the country and they would be exploited through a public-private partnership cooperation. El Salvador wants to achieve 40% of geothermal energy generation from current 24%.

In a recent interview with the architect David Lopez, president of the Executive Hydroelectric Commission of the Lempa River, has unveiled the vision and strategic objective established in El Salvador on energy issues.

Although the interview quite extensive and covers a number of generic issues, there are two highlights that impact considerably the development of geothermal projects in El Salvador.

On the one hand, there is a desire to increase the weight of geothermal energy in the power supply – more specifically, a target to reach 40% of the overall energy supply being geothermal, from the actual 24%.

In order to achieve this goal, Mr Lopez indicates that currently four new geothermal areas are being considered and they would be exploited through a public-private partnership cooperation, in order to make them more attractive to private investors. Under this new scheme, the Salvadoran state always retain a minimum of 51% of possible investments.
