New statistics show an increase of 35% of electricity production from geothermal power plants in Turkey for the first four months of this year compared over the same period last year.

Turkey has seen a rapid increase in electricity generation from geothermal energy. In the first four months of this year, the amount of electricity generated by geothermal power plants increased by 35% compared to the same period last year, to 2,259 GWh.

The increase in production is mostly due to additional installed capacity of geothermal power plants and improvements to the efficiency of power plants.

Ufuk ?entürk, Chairman of the Association of Geothermal Power Plant Investors (JESDER), says that installed power of JESs has increased to 1,100 MW by the end of 2017 and 1,155 MWe as of today. ?entürk said that in the first four months of the year, the increase in the amount of electricity generated at JESs was not only due to the growth in the total JES board strength but also because of the more efficient operation of the plants.

With Turkey’s imports of coal and natural gas, geothermal energy provides a domestic, renewable energy source.

“Geothermal is also an uninterrupted resource, unlike other alternative sources such as the sun and the wind,” said Senturk, “in this way, our geothermal power plants in Turkey’s network provide quality with continuous electricity production, and therefore also has contributed to the lowering of system costs, “he said.
