PT Sejahtera Alam Energy (SAE) has started its drilling campaign for exploration wells for its 220 MW Baturaden geothermal power project in Central Java, Indonesia.

As reported over the weekend, the Baturaden geothermal power project managed by PT Sejahtera Alam Energy (SAE) has started its drilling campaign for exploration wells on Wellpad H (Sumur SMT-01). The first well drilling at the Wellpad H PLTP Baturaden location, which is administratively located in Banyumas and Brebes districts, is done after the access road from Cilongok Village is connected.

“Now the drilling of well 1 in Wellpad H has been started on December 22 and (was then) at 340 meters deep,” said Yunus Saefulhak, Director of Geothermal of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), just before the new year.

The drilling of the first exploration well has been conducted by the main contractor, Halliburton, for about 60 days to a depth of 3,500 meters. Halliburton employs 120 local workers and 80 experts during the drilling activities of the well.

Baturaden PLTP capacity development plan is 220 MW and targeted to operate commercial (Commercial Operation Date / COD) in 2022 and 2024.

According to Yunus, PLTP Baturaden project is included in the national strategic project in order to meet the national electrical energy needs. This is as mandated in Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 3 of 2016 on Acceleration of Implementation of National Strategic Project and Presidential Regulation No. 4 of 2016 on Acceleration of Electricity Infrastructure Development.

The total investment required for Batutaden PLTP development is US $ 900 million, which for the exploration stage requires approximately US $ 75 million.

SAE has also been handling upstream activities such as reducing cut & fill activities at the project site and increasing protection such as the creation of settling ponds, filtering, drainage system so that the flow of Prukut river becomes clear again. While on the downstream side has been done coordination and handling efforts related to the river water cloudy Prukut.

The project area extends beyond the five regencies of Banyumas, Purbalingga, Tegal, Brebes and Pemalang. PT. Sejahtera Alam Energy shareholders consist of STEAG PE GmbH (Germany) and PT. Trinergy (Indonesia).
