This great post shared by Raymi Castilla, provides an overview on available free online courses on the internet for geothermal explorationists.

In a shared post on LinkedIN, Raymi Castilla published a great overview on free online courses related to geothermal exploration. Re-published here under permission of Raymi. Thanks.

The exploration for geothermal resources follows the same basic principles as the search for other kinds of natural resources (minerals, oil & gas). Once the components of a specific system are identified we just need to make sure they are all present in the specific location we’re interested in.

But, and you will forgive the cliché, the devil is in the details, and as I switched from oil & gas to geothermal exploration I realized I needed to come back to the fundamentals of some specific fields in Earth Science. Here’s a list of some of the online resources I found most useful.

MIT OpenCourseWare (OCW) – https://ocw.mit.edu

OCW makes the materials used in the teaching of MIT’s subjects available on the Web.

The most extensive and useful catalogue I’ve found so far. All courses are for free. There are no videos of the lectures but the slides and readings are available to download. Most courses include exercises, tests and exams. Here are some of the courses I find most useful for geothermal explorationists:

OpenLearn – http://www.open.edu

This is the free learning spin-off from the Open University UK. Most topics are short informative lectures but I find them very complete and well structured. There is one specifically for Geothermal Energy which is worth checking.

Stanford Online – http://online.stanford.edu/

The offer is very rich here. Some courses are “in-session” (they run at specific times in the year) and some are “self-paced” (choose whenever you want to follow it). Most free courses give a Statement of Accomplishment if all the assignments are completed. My favorite and the most applied to geothermal exploration is Reservoir Geomechanics but there are many more topics that can be useful.

Open Yale Courses – http://oyc.yale.edu

The offer is still somewhat limited but the quality is remarkable. There is a free and very complete course titled “The Atmosphere, the Ocean, and Environmental Change” with a 45 mins video lecture on geothermal energy.

Open Yale Courses (OYC) provides lectures and other materials from selected Yale College courses to the public free of charge via the Internet.

The web is full of free resources that can be used by geothermal explorationists. I’ve limited myself to list only those presented as free online courses. If you know of other useful resources, share it in the comments here.
