L’Institut de recherche d’Hydro-Quebec (IREQ) will receive $800,000 as it explores the potential for deep geothermal electricity production

According to Canadian news sources. the country’s federal government has doled out $25 million in funding to four clean technology projects in Quebec through Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC). Among several of them projects, “the L’Institut de recherche d’Hydro-Quebec (IREQ) will receive $800,000 as it explores the potential for deep geothermal electricity production for Quebec and Atlantic Canada.”

This is overall great news to see the Canadian government providing funding for some geothermal research, but is far from the funding needed to push for real development efforts. Furthermore, geothermal resources have been confirmed for Western Canada and could be more easily developed with the right kind of support, funding and political will through the federal government.
