Geothermal Development Company (GDC) expects to name the four companies that will be build and operate geothermal power plants under a PPP arrangement with GDC at Menengai, Kenya early next year.

Reported by local media from Kenya, Geothermal Development Company (GDC) has announced that it will release the names of four firms that will operate geothermal power plants from geothermal wells at the Menengai II project in Kenya early next year.

The company has shortlisted 19 companies, both local and international. Four of those will be named as developers for the planned plants, with each of those expected to represent 100 MW in geothermal power generating capacity. The steam of those will be sold to companies like KenGen.

“The four companies (are expected to) start generating electricity sometime next year… they will do it incrementally and by 2015, we expect them to jointly to be producing a total of 400MW,” Peter Omenda, general manager GDC, said.”

The wells were drilled by GDC and the plants are expected to be operated in a public private partnership structure. Under the planned structure, GDC will provide 20-40 percent of the capital.

In order to be shortlisted each of the investors will have to raise at least Sh17 billion ($202 million).
