GEG completes phase 1 of KenGen contract with additional 12.8 MW GEG geothermal wellhead plant at Olkaria, Kenya

Green Energy Group adds additional 12.8 MW of power generation capacity with its geothermal wellhead power plants. This completes phase 1 of its contract with KenGen in Kenya.

Following receipt of“Operational Acceptance Certificates” for its OLK04 and OLK05 plants at Olkaria, Kenya, Geothermal power plant supplier, Green Energy Group reports it has now completed the first phase of its 75MW contract with KenGen (the Kenya power utility). Both plants, which occupy adjacent wells have a nameplate capacity of 6.4 MW, provided by twin generator sets, each delivering 3.2 MW and were formally handed over to KenGen operational staff following successful completion of a stringent testing program.

Terje Laugerud, the CEO of Green Energy Group further commented that “ For Green Energy Group, the completion of these plants yet again demonstrates the success and flexibility of our wellhead design solution and once again has proven our capabilities and dedication to helping KenGen bring affordable geothermal power online.”

GEG’s VP Project Operations, Sigurdur Leopoldsson commented that “both the GEG team and our local partners have every reason to feel proud having to date brought more than 30MW of geothermal generating capacity online in Kenya and we are looking forward to continuing our partnership with KenGen in delivering the remaining 2 phases of the contract which provide for another 50MW to be delivered to the Kenyan grid”

In a recent interview in Kenya’s Daily Nation, KenGen CEO Alberg Mugo said, that Kengen “now seeks to lay more emphasis on modular and mobile power plants”, to provide the company “more flexibility in the generation of electricity.”

Having already commenced work on Phase 2, comprising 25MW delivered via 5 Model C50 plants, Green Energy Group expects to bring a further two plants on-line in Quarter 4, with the other three plants all at varying stages of development, being completed in the new year.
