The city of Ivano-Frankivsk is likely the site of the first geothermal heating project planned in the country of Ukraine. Behind the project with an expected cost of $15 million, is a group of investors from the Czech Republic.

Ukrainian news report that a group of investors from the Czech Republic are planning a geothermal heating project at Ivano-Frankivsk in Ukraine.

This would be the first project of this kind in the republic of Ukraine, so the director of the company Viktor Shevchuk late last week.

The company has looked at similar projects in Germany and expects to drill two wells to utilize hot thermal water for district heating in the city of Ivano-Frankivsk. The project will take 18 months to be completed with an expected payback of eight years. Total investment costs are expected to be EUR 12 million ($15 million). The project expects geothermal water to be found at a depth of 3,500 meters with a temperature of around 86 degrees Celsius.First

The local utility, Ivano-Frankivskteplokomunenergo, would be buying the heat at a price of UAH 110-130 per gigacalorie ($11.9/ MWh). With an overall production of about 140 GWh to 232 GWh, the annual revenue will be about $1.7-3.3 million.

About five of such plants could supply all the heating needed to the residents of the municipality. The local utility is interested in seeing the project progress proposing a set piece of land for the project and it will be discussed in the city council.

The city of Ivano-Frankivks was founded in 1650, has about 220,000 inhabitants and is located in the Western part of Ukraine.
