ThinkGeoEnergy and PIensaGeotermia introduce the IGC Islands geothermal conference under the theme of "Using the momentum, pushing for geothermal development in Island States" to take place on Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal, 15-16 May 2018.

With the conference Geothermal for Island States, under the theme “Using the momentum, pushing for geothermal development in Island States”, ThinkGeoEnergy and Enerchange are introducing a new event to take place on Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal, 15-16 May 2018.

In light of the effects of climate change being predominantly felt by the island states, as well as the high energy costs related to remote location and accessibility of energy sources, island states are searching for alternatives to their energy systems. Due to a mostly volcanic origin of the islands, geothermal energy is an attractive option providing base-load capacity and cost efficient energy. Geothermal can provide a stable and secure energy supply in addition to other renewable energy sources making the islands independent from expensive fossil fuel-based energy generation.

However, geothermal energy utilization in Island States is so far limited to a few  islands, but the potential is enormous. The IGC Island States aims to gather local representatives and international experts of the geothermal sector together to trigger geothermal energy development and facilitate the exchange of experiences and know how to use the potential of geothermal.

  • Venue & Date: Terceira – Conference Center – 15-16 May 2019
  • Format: One-to-one meeting and field trip. A business reception attached either prior or on the first day provides perfect networking opportunities.
  • Topics: Focus on geothermal development on island states, including resource establishment, exploration, plant technology and social and environmental impact assessment.

The event will feature workshops, a field trip to the 4 MW Pico Alto geothermal power plant, built by Exergy and CME on a turn-key basis, including engineering & construction of gathering systems, air cooled ORC unit equipped with Exergy Radial Outflow Turbine

  • Start of construction: January 2016
  • Start of operation: August 2017
  • Partly funded by EEA Grants

The event will be hosted by EDA Renováveis, Grupo Eda, with Exergy as Promoting Partner.

Further details about the event will be shared timely.
