After a slow process, California's SB 1139 has been approved on a vote of 8-5. This particular legislation requires energy retail sellers to procure 500 megawatts of electricity from baseload geothermal power plants by 2024.

Following the previous news (here, here and here) posted here on our website regarding the Senate Bill 1139, this piece of legislation has been approved in assembly aiming at diversifying the state’s energy portfolio by requiring energy retail sellers to procure 500 megawatts of electricity from baseload geothermal power plants by 2024.

The Imperial Valley News quotes one of the fathers of the bill stating that this in not only good for the environment but also allows to “generate $38M per year in local revenue, hundreds of high paying jobs and investments toward meaningful economic development. All of these benefits, resilience, and reliability to our current energy system for a small procurement of less than 1% of the current energy portfolio,” said Senator Hueso.

The same source details that SB 1139 was approved on a vote of 8-5 and now heads to Assembly Appropriations Committee.
