The first geothermal power plant in Mexico was built in 1959 with 3 MW generation capacity in the Pathe area in Hidalgo.

A Spanish article recently provided an overview on the history of geothermal energy utilization in Mexico.

The countries electricity generation authority has a blog that gives a great insight in the history about geothermal development in Mexico.

The following is a rough translation of that article, as it relates to geothermal.

In November 1959 the CFE began development of geothermal energy in Mexico when installed the first pilot plant in 3,000 Kw capacity in the Pathe area, Hidalgo. Although this plant was dismantled after 14 years of operation due to low capacity (less than 500 kw), it prompted the federal government to continue with geothermal exploration and development in other areas such as the Cerro Prieto, Baja California and Ixtán of Boilovers, Michoacán.
