The geothermal power project in Holzkirchen, Bavaria, Germany has signed a drilling contract, with planned drilling start early 2016 and plans to get the plant operational at the end of 2017.

Reported from Germany, the geothermal power project at Holzkirchen in the South of Munich, Bavaria, Germany.  The project is now doing some preparatory work, and drilling will start in February 2016 with an expected drilling target at a depth of 5,000 meters.

The drilling rig by ITAG, which has drilled several wells in the region for the local utility Stadtwerke München. The drilling contract was awarded two weeks ago by the city council of Holzkirchen and includes piping and the transition pieces when tapering the hole. Casings will be provided by a German manufacturer.

The initial budget for the project is about EUR 10.7 million ($12 million) which covers the drilling of the first well, which should be finalized by early 2016. The overall length of the well is expected to be around 5,600 meters with an expected target temperature of 140 degrees with a flow rate of at least 65 litres.

If successful, the project will have to seek a loan of up to EUR 28.6 million ($32 million). The project company Geothermie Holzkirchen GmbH, is a wholly owned subsidiary of the local utility.  The well pad has a size of around 6,000 square meters and is being prepared at the moment.

The target for getting the power plant operational is by the end of 2017 to tap into the existing feed-in-tariff.
