Iceland Drilling and the Government of Dominica sign new drilling contract for two geothermal wells in Dominica in the Caribbean. This follows an earlier announcement of a contract for the company in Montserrat in the region.

Earlier today, the Government of Dominica and geothermal drilling company Iceland Drilling have signed a new drilling contract for two additional geothermal wells in Dominica in the Caribbean.

This year, the company drilled three intermediate sized wells with promising results and a manifestation of the geothermal resources in the Wotten Waven area on the island.

On behalf of Iceland Drilling, Vilhjálmur Gudmundsson, Chief Executive of Corporate Development, signed the contract. For the Government of Dominica, the PS of the Ministry of Public Works, Energy and Ports, Mr. Lucien Blackmoore signed this new agreement.

Drilling is expected to start in May or June 2013 in the Wotten Waven area.Iceland Drilling recently moved one of its drilling rigs to Iceland for two contracts and signed a drilling contract with the Government of British territory of Montserrat in the Caribbean. For the Montserrat project, the company expects to start drilling two full size geothermal wells in the middle of January 2013.

Both projects in Dominica and Montserrat are estimated to take about 3-4 months each.

Two full sized geothermal “wells will be drilled, a production well in Laudat and a re-injection well in Lily Valley, Trafalgar, Dominica. Local news report of a project cost of $18.1 million.”

“At the (signing) ceremony Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit said that over $33-million has been injected into Dominica’s geothermal project despite the scarcity of financial resources. “The government believes that this investment in geothermal project will help us in the future to address all our challenges because it will see a reduction in energy costs to the citizens of Dominica and put us in a position to be able to export energy to Guadeloupe and Martinique,” he said.
