IGA announces Ph.D. Student Research Grant program

The International Geothermal Association announces the IGA PhD Student Research Grant program as a mechanism to support geothermal research for PhD students.

The International Geothermal Association launches the IGA PhD Student Research Grant program  as a mechanism to support geothermal researchers.

The purpose of the IGA PhD Student Research Grant program is to assist PhD students registered in a recognized program at a PhD-degree granting institution who is undertaking research in a subject area of geothermal energy in support of the student’s dissertation research work. The award mainly focuses on enhancing the student’s general research experience. The research independence of the applicant as well as the novelty and implications of research performed as a graduate student will be used for evaluation purposes.

A PhD Student Research Grant consists of a grant of up to $3000 (US). The actual amount will be decided by the IGA based on the request of the applicant and justifications. The funds may be used for direct research expenses (e.g. software license, computational time, analytical cost and incentives). It may not be used for tuition or personal expenses. IGA secretariat reimburses the expenditures based on evidence (original receipts) of eligible spending. Tuition fees are not  included in the expenditures of the grant.

In 2014, three research grants will be issued.


To be eligible for this grant, at the time of the application deadline the student must be enrolled in a doctoral program in geothermal energy studies (or its sub-disciplines) at a regionally accredited university or research institute.

Grant recipients are selected based on their overall potential for research excellence and their academic progress to-date, as evidenced by publications or other evidence. Strong preference is given to students who demonstrate outstanding research abilities early in their graduate training, and those who show a considerable level of independence in conducting their research.

Each recipient of the IGA PhD Student Research Grant shall acknowledge this support in their PhD dissertation and in any scientific publications derived from the part of the PhD research supported by IGA grant.

The grant recipient shall provide a copy of the PhD dissertation in its original languages. Also, a reprint of any scientific papers derived from the grant shall be sent to the IGA Secretariat.

The IGA ad hoc Research Committee is responsible for the selection. Geographic distribution is considered when making such selections.

How to apply

The submission deadline for submitting the below documents to the IGA Secretariat ( is 5 March 2014.

1. Application Letter

The application letter should include a presentation of the research, an introduction of the applicant, present the motivation, be signed by the applicant and emailed as a PDF to the IGA Secretariat.

2. Research Statement

A research statement with 1,000 words maximum should be provided. Citations and references are allowed but not required. In-text citations do count towards the maximum word limit. Reference lists on a separate page will not count towards the word limit. This may be submitted as either a Word document or a PDF. Be sure to include:

  • Information on your past research experience, including a section that highlights at least one project the student has completed or participated recently (within 12 months preceding the date of application). The student should state her/his role in the project and present her/his novel ideas clearly. Any discussion of research completed prior to graduate school will be weighed less heavily compared to recent work. Please do not include tables or figures.
  • Information about your current research and why it is important.
  • Proposed future research project.
  • Independence of research, novelty of ideas, and practical implications of the research.

3.  Abbreviated Curriculum Vitae

Your abbreviated curriculum vitae should be 2 pages maximum. This may be submitted as either a Word document or a PDF.

4. Two Letters of Recommendation

Your letters of recommendation should come from advisors and/or professors from your doctoral program and should be a maximum of 1 page each. Please communicate to the faculty members who will write your recommendation letters the importance of adhering to this page limit. These letters should highlight the independence of your research, as well as your potential within your field of interest. Please do not submit more than two letters of recommendation.
