Tata Power Company, Origin Energy, Chevron and several other firms have submitted bids on a 55-200 MW geothermal power project proposed for North Sumatra, Indonesia at Sorik Marapi.

Reported from Indonesia, “Tata Power Company, Origin Energy, Chevron and several other firms have submitted bids on a geothermal power project proposed for North Sumatra, Indonesia at Sorik Marapi. The project will have an initial generating capacity of 55 MWs, augmentable to 200 MW as demand grows, according to Industrial Information Resources.

Indonesia, which is within the extremely active seismic region called the Pacific Ring of Fire, has a geothermal power-generating potential of about 27,000 megawatts, according to IIR. Currently the country’s installed geothermal capacity is about 1,189 megawatts. Geothermal energy is key to Indonesia’s plans to construct 20,000 megawatts of power generation capacity in two phases that will include coal, renewable and geothermal projects, with the first phase winding up about 2025. Construction projects such as these generate heavy-lift and oversized project cargo.

Indonesia’s economy remained strong during the economic downturn and is expected to grow from 5.2 to 5.6 percent during 2010 and about 6 percent in 2011. However, some industry analysts say that opaque approval and tariff regimes and other issues may prevent the country from reaching its power generation goals anytime soon, according to IIR.”
