Iran has large ambitions for energy development, including geothermal and sees itself being able to join the ranks of the leading geothermal countries in the world today soon.

At recent meetings of South Africa’s and the Iranian Ministers of Energy, South Africa’s Minister, Tina Joemat-Pettersson, said that Iran could become the 9th largest geothermal energy producer.

To put this in context it would mean that Iran would join the Top 10 represented today, would require Iran to add in excess of 500 MW. With the ambitous geothermal development plans of countries not only in the top 10 today, but also the countries in the top 20 today, this is a rather challenging target.

But this shows that there is potential in Iran and with loosened embargoes, the market is ripe for investments into its energy sector with a lot of countries looking at getting into Iran.
