The city of Naples in Italy is planning the start of a geothermal project for heating and power generation at the flanks of the Campi Flegrei volcano in the West of city.

The city of Naples in Italy is likely more known for being at the foot of the Vesuvio volcano, but there is another volcano to the west of the city. The Campi Flegrei volcano is now the site of a geothermal project that plans to derive electricity and heating for use in Naples.

The announcement was made today at a conference in the city. The project is planned to include an integration with other sources of renewable energy.

The potential on site – so the city – is expected to be in the size of four nuclear power plants.

To start with the project will focus on heating and is expected to be the largest of a number of ”small ones located throughout the city” and to be financed by private sources.

The construction is expected to take about six months and – so city officials – “open a new future for the city of Naples”.
