Montserrat expects the arrival of the geothermal drilling rig from Iceland Drilling this week and expects the start of drilling two exploration wells in the coming weeks.

With the first geothermal drilling equipment to arrive later this week from Iceland, Caribbean Montserrat continues preparation of its geothermal project.

As it is a British territory, it has received funding from the UK’s Department for International Development of $13.45 million for exploration. In October the contract with Icelandic geothermal drilling company Iceland Drilling was signed and site preparation began than.

It is expected that drilling and testing will take about 3-4 months. Two wells are expected to be drilled to a depth of 5,000 feet or around 1,500 meters between Weekes Village and Garibaldi Hill. The likelihood of the project finding useable geothermal resources is estimated at 80 percent.
