Munich and neighbouring municipalities join forces on geothermal in Bavaria

The municipalities of Pullach and Grünwald in the south of Munich, already have successful geothermal plants that supply both communities with district heating. Together with the Munich municipal utilities, they now want to once again look for hot water in the depths, as reported by local radio station BR24.

Now seismic vibrator trucks are on the move in an area of about 80 square kilomoters between Schäftlarn and Straßlach-Dingharting. Through the vibrating trucks, the underground is examined with sound waves, so as to obtain a three-dimensional image of the ground.

Both communities praise cooperation

The city of Munich is pursuing the ambitious plan of becoming the first major German city by 2040, that will generate 100% of district heating from renewable energy . Stadtwerke München, of course, is pleased to have partners from the region who share its vision and also have very good results to achieve this great goal.

Jan Neusiedl (CSU), Mayor of Grünwald, sees the cooperation with the neighboring community Pullach positive: “Both Pullach and Grünwald have been successful in the transition to renewable energies and in the development of their geothermal projects for years .”

Jan Neusiedl Pullach’s Mayor Susanna Tausendfreund (Green Party) emphasizes the ecological aspects ofgeothermal energy: “In Southern Bavaria, we are fortunate enough to have a huge mineral wealth under our feet with geothermal energy.”

According to Tausendfreund, the use of this natural resource is an essential contribution to the phasing out of fossil fuels and thus to climate protection: “It therefore came as no surprise that the community of Pullach continues to explore this gift of Mother Nature right on their doorstep.”
