Three pieces of geothermal legislation with significance to development and permitting are currently making its way through the legislative process in the U.S. and could help spur development.

Last Tuesday, several initiatives took place for the geothermal industry in the US that have a significant effect on future development.

Leslie Blodgett from the GEA (Geothermal Energy Association) has published an article stating that the US “House subcommittee discussed three bills, with two specifically relating to geothermal development, while a Senate subcommittee looked at permitting needs.”

The three bills covered by the House subcommittee are centred on addressing the current setbacks that the geothermal industry is suffering in the us and that according to Chairman Doug Lamborn, they could be tackled through appropriate legislation by streamlining permitting processes ensuring shorter time for exploitation of potential geothermal resources, promote the development of renewable energy in public lands and equating geothermal to solar and wind power at a legislative stage.

The US Senate Committee also held on the same day a hearing that focused on “Examining Ways to More Efficiently Process Permits for Energy Production on Federal Lands”
