Ormat has withdrawn from negotiations on a potential 25 MW geothermal power plant development for Hawaii Electric Light Co. (HELCO).

In sad news today, it is reported that Ormat has withdrawn from contract negotiations with Hawaii Electric Light Co. (HELCO)

Following a lengthy process of selecting a potential developer for a 25 MW geothermal project on the Big Island of Hawaii starting in 2012, Ormat was selected about 12 months ago. The decision for Ormat was based on the company’s experience, offered price and performance standards.

The announcement was made by HELCO yesterday.

Ormat already operates the Puna Geothermal Venture plant on the Big Island, with an installed capacity of 38 MW.

There are no details available at this point in time why negotiations between the two parties failed. Following all the controversy and the seemingly lack of serious interest by HELCO in geothermal development this might not be that surprising … We reported on this several times, e.g. in this piece.
