Hungarian PannErgy has received permits for the construction of a geothermal district heating system in Miskolc. So far the company has already invested $30 million and drilled 5 geothermal wells.

As announced in late October, Hungarian Pannergy reports it has received a permit for a district heating project in Miskolc, Hungary.

The permit approves work on district heating facilities to supply heat, use water and to re-inject as part of the project. Hungary is very much dependent on gas for heating and is looking at geothermal for its heating needs to become more independent from expensive imported gas. Renewables- as part of the National Energy Strategy of the country , is to provide up to 15% of the energy supply for heating. The Miskolc project could provide up to 1 million Gigajoule of the planned 12 million gigajoules.

“We hope that in the context of Miskolc and the experience of implementing this pilot project, we can implement and use the work of accumulated competencies,
a new low-cost, and environmentally friendly heating solutions”- so the Chairman of PannErgy’s Board Bokorovics Balázs .

In September 2012, PannErgy completed the drilling of five geothermal wells at Miskolc. The project was launched in 2010, and about EUR 22-24 million ($29-31 million) have been invested in the project so far.  Later in 2013 another municipality might join in utilizing geothermal heat from the project.
