Even after the new legislation, the Director of Pertamina Geothermal Energy states that the permitting process can take up to 8 years.

Despite of the announcement last year by the Indonesian Government to allow for geothermal exploration in protected areas and for a simpler permitting process, Pertamina Geothermal still sees issues with the process.

In local news, the Director of Pertamina Geothermal Energy, Rony Gunawan, admit that current permitting processes are too slow. He explained that the length of the licensing process in finding and developing new sources of geothermal requires too many licenses such as permits for the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) a Permit for the Use of Forest Resources (IPPKH) in the Ministry of Forestry (MoF) among others.

According to Mr. Gunawan, the fastest timeframe is set at 5 years, with an average waiting time of 5-8 years to get all the permitting licenses and start development.
