Private market participation in the Costa Rica electricity market is increasing and new legal framework is to promote investment and diversify a market lead by state power company ICE.

Recent updates on the electricity market  in Costa Rica show the importance of the private generation in the country. In 2011, the private power generation market increased by 14% or 374 MW, of which 29.6 MW are from geothermal.

The goal with private market involvement in the energy market is driven by the national parliament that by a power sector framework opened the market for private participation.

There are though some legal issues that are of concern to some. At the moment the power sector is still dominated by the state power company ICE.
