Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority is seeking to renew a geothermal lease adjacent to Hawaii's only geothermal power plant of Puna Geothermal Venture.

The Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority is seeking a new geothermal lease for a former geothermal test site, adjacent to Hawaii’s only geothermal power plant of Puna Geothermal Venture.

The lease sought would be for a 65-year period and allow NELHA to continue to manage this 4 acre property. The mining lease in existence today will expire in June of this year. The lease was transferred to NELHA from the University of Hawaii in 1986.

The lease though is only a surface lease as it would not allow for additional geothermal use, so the Executive Director of NELHA Greg Barbour.
