Rig up started by GDC at Baringo-Silali geothermal project in Kenya
With the rig being set up, drilling is finally around the corner for the Bogoria-Silali geothermal project developed by Kenya’s Geothermal Development Company (GDC).
Kenya’s Geothermal Development Corp. (GDC) reports that the rig up has started for the Baringo-Silali geothermal project.
The Kifaru II rig is currently set up on the project site at Paka for the commencement of drilling. Drilling has been just around the corner for quite some time. The drilling contract with Hong Kong Offshore Oil Services was signed in April 2016, with exploration started in 2017. Funding of EUR 80 million for 15-20 wells was provided by German development bank KfW.
The Baringo-Silali geothermal block is estimated to have up to 3,000 MW development potential. Development is expected in three phases of each 100 MW in power generation capacity. GDC is in charge of drilling and setting up the steam gathering system, while private developers will be then developing the plants under an IPP structure. The Bogoria-Silali block includes the Bogoria, Baringo, Arus, Korosi, Chepchuk, Paka, and Silali prospects.
