Geothermal developer Klamath Basin Geopower is planning to drill a second well for its project in Oregon, with the first well providing sufficient heat and water flows for a geothermal power plant.

Klamath Basin Geopower is planning to move ahead with its plans for a second geothermal well, as reported locally.

The drilling was planned to start in June 2013, but so far a drilling permit is outstanding. If the permit is received by the Oregon Department of geology and Mineral Industries, the company sees the possibility for drilling to start as early as this fall or early next spring.

In the spring of this year, the company successfully drilled its first well to a depth of 6,000 feet (1,830 meters) and measuring temperatures of 280 degrees Fahrenheit (138 degrees Celsius). With a water output of 2,800 gallons per minute (177 liters per second), the well has a potential power generation capacity of 6.5 MW. To reach the project’s target of 21 MW, it would have to drill additional wells.

The company expects the second well to cost around $7 million.
