Seven projects have now been chosen for funding under the Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility (GRMF). The funding of USD 28 million is for surface studies and drilling for geothermal projects in Tanzania, Uganda, and Ethiopia.

Results of the 5th Application Round of the East Africa Geothermal Risk Mitigation Facility (GRMF) have been released.

The Request for Application (RfA) phase of the 5th GRMF Application Round (AR 5) started on 26 March 2018 after the pre-qualification workshop was held. On 4 June 2018, 9 applications (6 Surface Studies and 3 Drilling Programmes) were formally accepted. These 9 applications were submitted by 7 entities (4 public and 3 private) from 5 countries (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda) – out of the 11 GRMF countries.

It is now announce that 7 projects qualified for grant award in AR 5 of GRMF (4 Surface Studies and 3 Drilling Programmes).

Here an overview of qualified project in the following table:

The GRMF team is very pleased by the results of the Application Round 5 as it clearly shows the development of the East African geothermal market and the increasing number of market players. The development is also reflected by the quality of the applications, the reflected structured process of the projects and finally leading to the objective of the programme: an increased usage of geothermal energy in East Africa.

The respective qualification and rejection letters were already sent to all projects that submitted applications. The cumulative GRMF financial support – including potential continuation premium- for all qualified applications of AR 5 amounts to approximately USD 28.0 million.

In addition, the GRMF team informs about the possibility to meet the complete GRMF team at the 7th African Rift Geothermal Conference (ARGeo-C7) which will be held in Kigali (Rwanda) from 29 October to 4 November 2018.  Face-to-face meetings will be possible on 31 October and 1 November 2018 from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, with about 30 minutes per developer. Please let us know as soon as possible which date and time you would like to meet us there. Your request should be sent to Mr Sylvain Degolmal Ngaryo (NgaryoS@africa-union.org).
