The 3rd IGC Turkey Geothermal Congress has successfully concluded yesterday in Ankara, Turkey. With around 300 participants from Turkey's geothermal sector and from abroad, the event has established itself as the key geothermal event in Turkey.

The third IGC Turkey geothermal congress took place this week in Ankara, Turkey and again brought together the Turkish geothermal community.

Featuring several workshops and topical forums on current issues faced by the geothermal sector in Turkey, the event saw a participation of around 300 representatives of companies, developers, suppliers, investors, banks, municipalities, organizations and the government.

The congress has established itself as the annual meeting point of Turkey’s geothermal sector, and its international partners and those interested in joining the further growth of Turkey’s geothermal sector.

In one of the most anticipated workshops of the congress, the World Bank provided details on its new Risk Sharing Mechanism to support investment into geothermal development in Turkey and introduced the chosen consultant group that will oversee the implementation and management of that programme.

Other workshops on the morning of the first day provided details on drilling and related services in the Turkish market, testing geothermal wells.

In the afternoon of day 1, three workshops featured de-risking and financing of geothermal projects, provided an overview on international projects, and a special workshop introducing WING, the Women in Geothermal Chapter in Turkey.

Concluding the day, the IGC Lounge created a great networking venue for fruitful discussions and engagement beyond the confines of the workshops.

On the Congress day of the event, Johannes Zott, the Country Director for Turkey of the World Bank opened the congress together with Philippe Dumas, the Secretary General of EGEC.

The morning featured three different forums with lively presentations and discussions. Forum I discussed several different support mechanisms for geothermal energy development. Forum II discussed on how geothermal projects can avoid CO2 emissions and deal with environmental issues. Forum III looked more general into the development of geothermal fields in Turkey.

In the early afternoon, a keynote presentation was delivered by Fazil Senel of EPDK, the licensing authority in Turkey in which he talked about the impressive growth and current status of capacity being 1,155 MW providing details on the licensing and authorization processes for geothermal development in Turkey.

The different supporters of the congress then provided short overviews on their companies and activities in Turkey.

In the afternoon additional three Forums featured an overview on current issues related to power generation and technology, challenges for direct use of geothermal resources and the operation of geothermal reservoirs.

Overall, the congress was a great success and has established itself as the annual meeting points

Next year’s event will again be held in Izmir, the heart of Turkey’s geothermal sector. The date for the event will be published in the coming weeks.
