The combined geothermal heat and power project of Taufkirchen in Bavaria, Germany has officially started construction with a start of operation planned for the end of 2014.

Already in mid-March, Daldrup & Söhne AG und the project company GeoEnergie officially started the construction for a combined geothermal heat and power plant in Taufkirchen, Germany.

The project, which is located in the Bavarian Molasse Basin, plans to start operation of its plant by the end of 2014.

By 2015, the plant is expected to provide 76GWh in heat and 26 GWh in electricity to the community of Taufkirchen.

The actual work started already in the beginning of 2014, with heat being provided since December 2013 with some provisional installation.

The drilling campaign was concluded in the summer of 2012 with a water output of 120 liters per second at a temperature of 135 degrees Celsius.

Therefore the project plans with a binary solution and in discussions was a Kalina Cycle plant that would use a water-ammonium mix as binary fluid.

In a statement by the Ministry for Industry & Commerce of Bavaria, Ilse Aigner, she highlighted the reliability and base-load capacity offered by geothermal. With a high efficiency, the project not only provides power but heat as a by-product.

The combined heat and power plant will have an installed thermal capacity of 35 MW and a power generation capacity of 4.3 MW. The plant is expected to generate electricity of 26 GWh and heat of 76 GWh. This – so the developer – should save up to 18,000 tonnes  carbon-dioxide emission annually compared to conventional power and heat production.

The project stakeholders are Geysir Europe GmbH (Daldrup & Söhne AG holds 75,01 Prozent) with 44 percent, the Swiss Axpo AG with 35 percent and the utility of the municipality of Oberhaching with about 21 percent.

The plant will serve the population of Oberhaching and Taufkirchen.
