Greek energy firm Terna Energy won the tender for geothermal concessions at South Chios, Smothraki, Evros Basin and Nestos Basin, Xanthi, and Porto Lagos for geothermal exploration in the next 5 year, having to invest EUR 95 million (US$134m).

Reported yesterday, TERNA Energy has been announced as winner of Greece’s call for tenders and owners of the geothermal concessions of  South Chios, Samothraki, Evros Basin and Nestos Basin – Xanthi – Porto Lagos for geothermal exploration during the next 5 years.

Under the terms of their agreement with the Ministry of Energy, they must invest 95 million euros in geothermal exploration in the next 2 years.

The tender, the first of its kind ever in Greece, covered four regions in the delta of the Nestos River, the Evros Delta, the island of Samothrace and the eastern Aegean island of Hios. The Institute for Geological and Mineral Research (IMGE), in a report, said there was evidence of rich geothermal energy sources in these sites.

The tender attracted a handful of companies, such as Italy’s ENEL SA, ORMAT; Hellenic Geothermal Holdings Corp; and major Greek groups, such as PPC Renewables, Aegean Energy and ITA-Terna Energy. The value of submitted bids surpassed 350 million euros.”
