A recent local article provides some further details about the United Downs geothermal project in Cornwall, England, which plans to start drilling in early 2018.

The UK’s first geothermal power project is kicking off in Cornwall, England. Geothermal Engineering Ltd, (GEL) is set to begin exploratory drilling at Union Down in early 2018.

As reported by Cornwall Live, “if the test site proves a success, a power plant could be operational by 2020, and could produce enough electricity to fully supply up to 1,500 homes.

To generate electricity, water is pumped 4.5km below the surface of the earth, where it is heated to up to 175 degrees Celsius before being pumped back to the surface where it is used to drive the power plant.

Now GEL has announced the new GBP10.6 million exploratory drilling project at United Down near Redruth to pump geothermal heat and electricity into the National Grid.

Julian German, deputy leader of Cornwall Council, said exploratory drilling will begin in early 2018 and take about six months.

Testing the wells, characterising the geothermal system and installing the power plant will take a further 18 months, with a target commissioning date in early 2020.”
