The World Bank pledges an additional finance infusion of $150 million into the Menengai Geothermal Project in Kenya to speed up exploration and drilling activities.

Geothermal development keeps on going at full speed in Kenya. Local news now report that the World Bank has pledged to infuse additional Sh10 billion ($148 million) into the Menengai geothermal project.

The funding now pledged is to speed up drilling and exploration of the development as part of the increasing efforts by Geothermal Development Company (GDC) on the development at Menengai.

Speaking during a recent tour of Menengai Project, the World Bank sustainable development sector leader, Mr Nathan Belete, assured GDC of its support to make sure it achieves its intended goal of driving the economy of this country.

“As your allies, we shall support you as we are satisfied with the current progress on the ground. You have maintained the high standards and accomplished all the strategies you have put in place,” said Mr Belete who also represents Rwanda, Eritrea and Somalia.

“I have toured a number of geothermal projects across the continent but I must say I’m very much impressed by the encouraging pace Kenya has attained so far in the development of green energy,” said Mr Belete.

The World Bank stays committed to help GDC in the development of geothermal resources in the country, according to the bank’s energy and finance specialist, Mr Mits Motohashi.

There are various cooperation agreements and initiatives in place, e.g. via the United States Agency International Development (USAID) and Geothermal Energy Association having formed the East Africa Geothermal Project (EAGP) to boost exploitation and the cooperation of the Nordic Fund and the World Bank on a strategy that is to ensure that each country in the East Africa Rift Valley system successfully drills at least one exploration well.
