The people of Yellowknife in the Canadian North West Territories are going to the polls to approve the city borrowing $49million for the geothermal heating project at Con Mine.

Reported from the Canadian North West Territories, the people of the city of Yellowknife will be going to the polls, being asked to allow the city to borrow up to C$49million , that are needed to kick start the geothermal heating project at Con Mine.

Mayor Gordon Van Tighem said they need to make sure they have the necessary funds for the district heating system.

“We’ve done a plebiscite before and found that we didn’t even need to borrow so it’s a matter of getting permission to borrow if you need to,” he said. “But in order to get the permission to borrow, you need to provide information as to what the maximum amount would be, how you’re going to repay it and how that’s all going to work to the benefit of the community.”

The plan is to use revenues generated from the district energy system, to pay off any interest and principal on a potential loan.

Van Tighem said they’ve sent out a request for proposals to see who might want to participate in developing the Con Mine geothermal project, expected to heat dozens of buildings in the downtown core.

Yellowknifers found out the nuts and bolts of the proposed $60 million dollar project at a public session Monday tonight at Northern United Place.

The plebiscite on borrowing money will take place March 14th.”
