Zorlu Energy has brought its 65.5 MW Unit 2 of the Kizildere III geothermal power plant online, bringing its total capacity to 165 MW, the largest geothermal plant in Turkey.

In an announcement today, Zorlu Energy announced that its subsidiary Zorlu Dogal Elektrik, has commissioned the 65.5-MW Unit 2 of its Kizildere III plant on the border between the southwestern provinces of Aydin and Denizli.

The investment for the plant was around $320 million. With the second unit now having come online, the Kizildere geothermal plant becomes the largest in Turkey with an installed power generation capacity of 165 MW.

Zorlu Energy operates five geothermal power plants with a combined installed capacity of 329.9 MW. This represents roughly 31% of the total geothermal power generation capacity in Turkey.

Zorlu now operates a portfolio of five geothermal plants, totalling 329.9 MW. Overall the company holds some 31% of Turkey’s total geothermal capacity across 40 sites totalling 1,100 MW, making it the largest geothermal operator in the country by a considerable margin.

The company also holds a so-called “pre-licence” for the 50-MW Alasehir III geothermal project, which is currently under consideration by Turkey’s Ministry for Environment and Urban Affairs.
