18 MW Turcas Kuyucak geothermal power plant starts operation in Aydin, Turkey

Turcas Energy Holding announces the start of operation of its 18 MW Kuyucak geothermal power plant in the province of Aydin, Turkey.

As reported by our sister publication JeotermalHaberler, the new 18 MW Kuyucak geothermal power plant has started operation.

Turcas Kuyucak Geothermal Electricity Generation Co. (TKJ) received a production license for 18 MW installed capacity in 2016, and the final investment decision was made to accelerate the investment in electricity generation.

The first production drilling and short-term well flow tests were completed in November 2014 in the business license area of Aydin Kuyucak District of Aydin Province.

Between 2014 and 2016, the project drilled seven wells, of which are 5 production and 2 reinjection wells. The last well was successfully completed in the beginning of this year.

The first-phase electricity production capacity has a production license of 18 MW in total. The plant is operated in a joint venture by Turcas Petrol, through Turcas Energy Holding Inc.. (TKJ) holding 92% and Alte Enerji (8%).

On March 1, 2016, TKJ and Türkiye Sinai Kalkinma Bankasi A.S. (TSKB) signed a 14 years loan agreement with cash and / or non-cash loans amounting to USD 15 million and US $ 40.5 million and non-cash loans with a maximum of 30 months principal amounting to TL 10 million. The loan has been used to finance the investment of the Kuyucak geothermal power plant, totalling US$ 71.25 million (including financing costs).

In 2016, production potential was determined and the first phase production module has been ordered, construction is progressing rapidly.

The temporary regulatory acceptance was completed as of December 7, 2017.

The plant was designed, built and installed by Italian ORC supplier EXERGY.

Turcas Kuyucak JES will sell electricity within the scope of YEKDEM ( Renewable Energy Support Mechanism of Turkey) starting to sale electricity from January 1, 2018 for a period of 10 years. The plant will earn $0.118/ kWh feed-in-tariffs, with additional incentive to use domestic equipment for electricity generated during the first five years. In the following second five-year period, the electricity to produce the plant is entitled to sell at a price of $0.105/ kWh.
